Los Cabos 2025 Ground Delays: Major Road Construction and Temporary Alternate Routes Now in Effect

Despite earlier reports of severe traffic delays due to road construction near MMSD, our team on the ground in San José del Cabo confirms that current driving times remain normal thanks to newly opened alternate routes. Crew and passenger ground transfers are proceeding without disruption. We will continue to monitor conditions closely and provide updates as needed.
Business aviation operators traveling to Los Cabos should prepare for significant ground transfer delays due to major road construction at a key intersection linking both area airports—San José del Cabo International Airport (MMSD) and Cabo San Lucas International Airport (MMSL)—to the hotel zone, the tourist corridor, and downtown Cabo San Lucas.
Major Construction Underway at “Glorieta Fonatur”
On May 20, 2025, local authorities began long-term infrastructure work at the Glorieta Fonatur roundabout, a major traffic artery near MMSD. The construction is expected to last 18 months, significantly impacting airport access throughout the region.
Construction Impact on MMSD and MMSL Access
Due to its proximity to the roundabout, San José del Cabo International Airport (MMSD) and its surrounding hotel zone are experiencing the most direct impact. However, travelers commuting between MMSD and Cabo San Lucas, or arriving at MMSL and transiting through the same traffic corridors, should also expect delays—especially during peak times. Transfer times of up to 2–3 hours have been reported. To avoid disruption, operators are strongly advised to build in buffer time and coordinate closely with local handlers.
Temporary Alternate Routes Now Open
Following the initial traffic surge, local authorities have opened four temporary alternate routes via Arroyo Costa Azul to help relieve congestion. These detours provide access to the hotel zone and city center, though some segments may be unpaved:
- Route 1: Colinas Plus – Arroyo Costa Azul
- Route 2: Monte Real – Arroyo Costa Azul
- Route 3: Vista Hermosa – Arroyo Costa Azul
- Route 4: G-20 – Arroyo Costa Azul
These routes were opened specifically to maintain access to MMSD, MMSL, and the broader Cabo region during the Glorieta Fonatur project.
Long-Term Improvements Planned
Upon completion, the project will introduce sub-level roadways designed to accelerate traffic flow and ease congestion in the long term. Until then, however, congestion and construction-related delays should be expected.
Recommendations for Operators
-
Anticipate 2–3 hour delays between either airport and hotel or event zones.
-
Allow extra time for crew repositioning, customs clearance, and FBO check-ins.
-
Coordinate with local ground handlers to stay updated on optimal routing.
-
For high-priority or tight operations, consider overnight repositioning or earlier shuttle transfers.
Universal Aviation Mexico will continue to monitor this situation and provide updates as additional guidance becomes available.
