Requests are prioritized based on when they are received. Operators submitting requests less than two hours before arrival may not receive a parking position except for quick-turn operations. Operational handling information should also be submitted 36 hours before scheduled arrival.

LIPZ does not require airport slots.

“During the Film Festival, operators need to think about parking at the same time they are requesting the PPR. Getting into Venice is only part of the plan. You also need to know whether the aircraft can stay and, if not, where it will reposition,” said Gheri Armano, Supervisory Representative, Universal Aviation Italy – Venice.

Can operators remain overnight at LIPZ?

Yes, but parking during the 2026 Film Festival will be limited to a maximum of 24 hours.

That makes the aircraft schedule itself a major planning decision. Operators whose passengers intend to remain in Venice for several days should not assume the aircraft can remain at LIPZ for the duration of the trip.

For stays beyond 24 hours, a repositioning airport should be identified before arrival.

“For stays longer than 24 hours, the repositioning airport should already be part of the plan. Treviso and Trieste are the closest options, but if parking is tight, Linate is usually the safer fallback,” said Armano.

What are the best alternate airports for Venice?

For 2026, the most practical repositioning strategy centers on Treviso, Trieste and, when greater parking certainty is needed, Milan Linate.

Treviso Airport (LIPH)

Treviso is one of the closest practical alternates to Venice.

Its operating hours are 0700-2300 local, with no exceptions, so the repositioning schedule must fit within that window.

LIPH also offers GA handling and CIQ processing. Advance notification of CIQ requirements is recommended for international operations.

Because of its proximity, Treviso is a logical first alternate when its operating hours and parking availability work with the mission schedule.

Trieste Airport (LIPQ)

Trieste is another close repositioning option and operates from 0600-2400 local.

It provides ground handling support and GSE, while international GA passengers and crew normally clear CIQ through the main terminal. Advance notification is recommended.

Its longer operating day may provide additional scheduling flexibility when Treviso’s 2300 local closure is restrictive.

Milan Linate Airport (LIML)

Linate should be considered when parking availability is more important than remaining close to Venice.

According to local operational guidance, Linate is typically a strong option for parking when LIPZ cannot accommodate the required stay and the closer alternates do not work for the mission.

The tradeoff is greater repositioning distance, but for a multi-day stay, parking certainty may outweigh proximity.

CIQ clearance

At LIPZ, CIQ is normally handled through the general aviation facilities during normal airport operating hours of 0600-2200 local.

At LIPH, GA passengers and crew use a dedicated entrance to the terminal for CIQ processing.

At LIPQ, clearance is normally completed through the main terminal.

For international arrivals or departures at LIPH and LIPQ, operators should provide advance notification of CIQ requirements.

Fuel planning at LIPZ

Jet A-1 is available at LIPZ from multiple suppliers, and several contract-fuel programs are accepted.

Fuel trucks normally operate efficiently, but servicing delays are possible during heavier scheduled commercial activity, particularly from approximately 1100-1400 local.

Private non-revenue operations at LIPZ may uplift fuel only within four hours of departure.

Charter operators have more flexibility and may be able to fuel on arrival when the next sector does not depart the EU.

Fuel should therefore be coordinated around the confirmed operating schedule rather than treated as a last-minute departure service.

In-flight catering

Catering can be coordinated through Cocos at LIPZ, LIPH and LIPQ, allowing operators to expect the same level of service at all three airports.

At least 24-48 hours’ advance notice is recommended, particularly during the Film Festival when local hotel, restaurant and hospitality demand is elevated.

This also means catering capability does not need to be a deciding factor when choosing between LIPZ, Treviso and Trieste.

Why water transportation matters to the aircraft schedule

Venice introduces a transportation dependency that does not exist at most high-traffic events.

Passengers traveling between LIPZ, Venice and the Lido often rely on boats or water taxis. A water taxi terminal is located immediately outside the LIPZ general aviation facilities.

Public water transportation can take up to approximately one hour between the airport and Venice Island. Private water taxis provide a more controlled option and should be coordinated in advance when passenger timing is critical.

The key operational point is that passenger movement, crew movement and aircraft timing are interconnected.

“Venice is different because you are not only planning the aircraft movement. You also have to account for how passengers and crew are getting across the water. If timing is important, that transportation needs to be coordinated with the flight schedule,” said Armano.

Crew hotels

September is already a high-demand tourism period in Venice, and the Film Festival adds further pressure.

Preferred hotels on Venice Island and the Lido may sell out, although quality crew accommodations can usually still be sourced when arrangements are made early.

Operators should consider hotel location together with crew transportation requirements. A property that appears geographically close may still involve meaningful water-transfer time.

Are any strikes or disruptions expected during the Festival?

At present, no aviation strikes or other known operational disruptions are expected to affect business aviation traffic associated with the Film Festival.

A rail strike has been announced for Sept. 7, but it is not expected to affect business aviation operations.

Operators should still reconfirm the local operating environment as the trip approaches, particularly for any new industrial action or transportation disruptions.

What causes Venice Film Festival missions to become difficult?

Problems usually develop when several individually manageable constraints intersect.

For 2026, the 24-hour LIPZ parking limitation makes this particularly important. A passenger itinerary lasting several days can require the aircraft to reposition even when the arrival itself is straightforward.
